SANGSTER FAMILY HISTORY AND FAMILY TREES
the Sangster family was established by two first cousins :
John Sangster, Pen Keeper, who had a son George by a slave Sarah in Westmoreland and
Jahn David Sangster Land Surveyor, who had a son named John by a slave Elizabeth also in Westmoreland.
At that time, their mother's brother, Hugh Wilson, was a land surveyor in Jamaica
Those two Sangsters came from Bannf, Gamrie, Aberdeen Scotland.
I do not have much information on George and his descendants.
John, who is my ancestor, moved to Darliston Westmored where he married Catherine Dennison and produced 6 Children including my Great Grand Father John Dazzlewright Sangser. Pen Keeper
John Dazzle moved to Fullerswood St. Elizabeth, where he was a very successful farmer. He married Jane Watt, the daughter of a Scottish pastor who was working in Jamaica at that time. The marriage provided 4 sons and a daughter, namely John, Peter, William, Charles, and Rebecca. His children produced for him about 56 grandchildren, I have information on about 43 of those children. Many of those grand children migrated to the UK and the USA
The family tree that I have been working on, which is incomplete, shows information on Sangster from about 1680.
I have links to the Scottish Sangsters family tree, which includes our 2 ancestors. I also have links to another Sangster Family tree, which includes the name of some of my uncles and also my name .. I can provide family members with those links
THE SANGSTER FAMILY OF JAMAICA.
The John Dazzlewright Sangster 2023 Reunion Group has now been changed to the Sangster Family of Jamaica Group' The effect of this change is that it now clarifies that membership of the group includes a) Descendants of John David Sangster, The Land Surveyor ie John Sangster and Catherine Dennison Of Darliston Westmoreland and B) The descendants of John Sangster, The Albany Estate Overseer ie George Sangster. (born between(1787-1788) baptized 1817. Died 1840. buried at Savannah Westmoreland. .
FAMILY INFORMATION IN HAND..
We have information on the Scottish side of our family of William Sangster and Agnis Burd from 1640 to their descendants, John Sangster the Land Surveyor, and John Sangster the Estate Overseer, who migrated to Westmoreland in Jamaica. In the case of John the Surveyor, we have information on his son John, John's children, and grandchildren. In the case of John Dazzlewright Sangster, we have the name of his children and the names of about 35 of his grandchildren...In the case of John Sangster, The Overseas, We see the record of his son George Sangster and many very many other Sangsters who we believe are descendants of George Sangster. We need more information to confirm this position.
The task of preparing the Sangster Family Tree and the complete history of the Jamaica Sangster family is a very challenging one. However, I believe that with the abilities, enthusiasm, and persistent participation of the many Sangster family members, we will achieve these visions
ORGANIZATION OF THE JAMAICA SANGSTER FAMILY GROUP
Here are just my suggestions for the Sangster organization until the Members of the Sangster Family Coordinating Committee meet in October 2023 to a) determine the aims of the Sangster family group and b) set up the organization to achieve their goals.
It is essential that all members of the family have the opportunity to participate in the function of the Sangster family group. The family members are placed in 20 groups with a leader who will represent them on the family coordinating committee. The groups are to be combined into 5 major groups with a leader who will represent them on the Sangster Management Team.
THE COMBINED SUBGROUPS WITH THEIR RECOMMENDED LEADERS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
KingsleySangster and Derrick Sangster Gps : 1 , 7 , 14 , 16.
Bindley Sangster and Selena Sangster: Gps 9, 11 , 12, 15.
Dwayne and Victoria Geohagen Gps 3, 10, 17,20.
Olivia Vega and Luisa Ann Gps 2, 4, 8. 18.
Avis Minott and Kathleen Campbell Gps 5, 6, 13, 19.
The duty of the combined subgroups are:
a) Organized weekly meetings in the Sangsters audio rooms where new members can introduce themselves to other members of the group. New members could indicate a) names of parents and grandparents, current Location, occupation etc
b) Arrange for their members to complete their family tree showing grandparents down to present family members
Encourage members to introduce new members to the group andd) Seek advise from members on an additional activity in which the group should engage.
All committee members will be selected from members of the family group. The success of the organization depends largely on the commitment and dedication of members.
ALL MEMBERS SHOULD LEARN HOW TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE AUDIO ROOMS FOR MEETINGS. FELIPE AND DWAYE CAN ORGANIZE TRAINING FOR THAT FUNCTION
THE JAMAICA SANGSTER FAMILY GROUP ORGANIZATION.
The Sangster family group membership now reaches 145 members. It is very important that our organizational structure be established so that all members can participate in the development and implementation of programs to achieve our goals.
In the meantime, I have broken down the 145 members into 20 groups and assigned a leader for each group.. The Group leaders will in effect form the Coordinating Committee for the Sangster family Group. This committee has the responsibility to determine the aims and objectives of the organization, develop the organization structure to perform the programs, and ensure that the aims of the group are achieved. The group leaders should meet at least once per month.
The sub-group activities could include a) developing their own family tree. From say Great Grad father John Sangster to Noel Sangster to Kingsley Sangster to daughter Suzanne to Susan's daughter. d) Discuss and suggest matters the organization should cover, c) Historical information they would like to include in the Sangster family history book, etc. There is a lot we as a group can achieve if we work smart in harmony with each other.
My experience shows that members are anxious to know more about each other. Starting next Saturday I suggest we organize weekly meetings to introduce new members. In addition to this, each member can make a video clip of themselves on their telephone and send it to Felipe, who can merge and show them at the introduction meetings in the audio rooms

Sir Donald Sangster, son of William Sangster, who was the son of John Dazzlewright Sangster ORE INFORATION ON SIR DONALD SANGSTER THE MOST HON. SIR DONALD BURNS SANGSTER, ON, KCVO
The late Donald Sangster entered Munro College at ten and boarded in Calder House. He passed eight subjects, including a distinction in Chemistry in 1925 in the Junior Local Cambridge examinations. In 1927, he came second in Jamaica in the Senior Cambridge examinations - the same year that his father died.
Donald was a natural athlete. He first participated in athletics at Class 3 Under -14 in 1924, and won the 100 yards, pole vault, and hurdles, placed second in the 220 yards, and third in the long jump, becoming Class 3 Champion. He was captain of his house cricket team and, as opening batsman for the school team, was described as “hard to dispose of.” After leaving Munro, he became captain of the St. Elizabeth Nethersole Cup cricket team, also played cricket for Mountainside, and joined the Black River Football Club.
After school, he felt the tug to go into politics and campaigned with his legislator uncle, Peter Watt Sangster, in the 1930s. His political career began in 1933 when he won a seat on the St. Elizabeth Parochial Board (now renamed the Parish Council) at the age of 21. He became Vice-Chairman of the Board from 1941 through to 1945 and Chairman in 1947, the youngest in Jamaica’s history.
He believed one should be properly equipped to help people, and so he opted to also study law, and became articled to Solicitor Mervin T. King in Black River. Donald took to law like a duck to water, and in 1937, at 26 years old, he came first in Jamaica in the final Solicitors’ examinations.
His ambitions to help people did not always fit neatly into a JLP or PNP category, and after universal adult suffrage and a new constitution came in 1944 and general elections were held, Sangster ran as an Independent candidate. He lost to B.B. Coke of the victorious Jamaica Labour Party. Donald turned his attention back to his local social issues and became the secretary of the Tourism Development Association of the parish, exploring ideas like fishing and boating on the Black River, a lookout point at Lovers Leap, the development of beaches, Bamboo Avenue, and the establishment of a craft centre.
The second general elections took place in 1949. This time, Donald ran for the JLP, against four other candidates, including the incumbent B.B. Coke, who was now an independent candidate. Sangster won, the JLP won again, and party leader Alexander Bustamante assigned him to the Social Welfare portfolio as part of his five-member cabinet. One year later, Sangster was elected the first deputy leader of the party and served in that office for 17 years. In February 1953, Sir Harold Allan died, and Donald Sangster became the new Minister of Finance and leader of the House. From that time on, Donald Sangster became the solid base of the Jamaica Labour Party- the maestro who captured the sometimes overheated statements of Bustamante and marshalled them into legal policy. His consensual approach from a position of knowledge and experience gave stability to the JLP Government. He also became formidable in the outside world of politics – in Washington, in London, and the Commonwealth- and earned from his colleagues the title of “Mr. Commonwealth.”
After losing to the PNP in 1955, in the general elections of 1962, the JLP again won, and Donald was again returned to the finance portfolio. On March 11, 1963, just before the end of the first year in office as government, the 79-year-old Bustamante appointed Donald Sangster as deputy prime minister.
Bustamante’s health deteriorated, and he had to relinquish his duties, and in January 1965, he asked the Governor General to appoint Donald Sangster as acting Prime Minister, acting minister of external affairs, and acting minister of defence. In the next general elections held on February 21, 1967, Sangster led the JLP to victory with 33 seats to the PNP’s 20. On February 22, 1967, Donald Sangster was sworn in as Prime Minister of Jamaica.
Less than a month after becoming Prime Minister, on March 18, 1967, Donald Sangster suffered a cerebral seizure while on retreat at Newcastle preparing for the budget. On March 21, he was flown to Montreal Neurological Institute in Canada. On April 7, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II while in a coma. On April 11 he died in a hospital in Montreal. On April 17, 1967, he was interred at National Heroes Park after a State Funeral.

Extract from the Jamaica Government Sermony Commemorating the 113th Anniversary of the birth of Sir Donald Sangster at National Heroes Park Kingston on Saturday, October 26, 2024. MOST HONOURABLE SIR DONALD SANGSTER, ON, KCVO. 'THE IMPACT'. On this, the 113th birth anniversary of our 2nd Prime Minister, Sir Donald Sangster, we recall with gratitude his steadfast thirty-four years of service to Jamaica. Vast were his contributions to nation building, despite holding the unfortunate distinction of being the shortest-serving Prime Minister. Prior to being elected as Prime Minister, Sir Donald served staunchely as Acting Prime Minister for two years. An extraordinary and multifaceted patriot, he gave of himself in numerous national capacities such as the Deputy Leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, Leader of the House of Representatives, Minister of Social Welfare, Minister of Finance, Minister of External Affairs, and Minister of Defence, among others. Born on this day in 1911 in the parish of St Elizabeth, Donald Burns Sangster was moulded for a life of greatness through the prestigious Munro College, in which he boarded at age 10. An excellent academician, he placed second in Jamaica in the Senior Cambridge examinations in 1927, the same year his father died. Subsequently, he studied law, and at the age of 26, he came first in Jamaica in the final Solicitor's examinations. Ever the rounded individual, Donald was a versatile sportsman, participating enthusiastically in cricket, football athletics, gymnastics, and boxing. while attending college. A born leader and change agent, Donald later served as captain of the St. Elizabeth Parish team in the Nethersole Cricket Cup Competition as well as a member of numerous boards and committees representing the interests of Farmers, Boy Scouts, Educators, and Sportsmen. DONALD Sangster lived a phenomenal life in service to the Jamaican people. Being a gentleman to a fault and known for his serious countenance, quiet temperament, and dedicated hardworking personality, Sir Donald was much loved and widely admired. He, in the words of National Hero Norman Washington Manley, "was regarded with esteem and respect by all". Even while serving as the Acting Prime Minister, Sangster was described as " a trustworthy person who, with full power, would hold the scales evenly balanced" (Spotlight Magazine 1965).
